How much life insurance do you need?

Move the sliders for a quick ballpark. It adds up the income your family would need, your mortgage and debts, education for your kids, and final expenses, then subtracts coverage you already have.

For educational purposes only. This estimate uses simple assumptions (income × years, plus debts, about $50,000 per child for education and $15,000 for final expenses, minus existing coverage). It does not account for inflation, taxes, investment returns, Social Security or other benefits, and it is not financial, tax or legal advice. Actual coverage, eligibility and premiums depend on the insurance company's underwriting, your health and your state.

Why life insurance matters

Life insurance gives your family money when they need it most: to keep the house, pay bills, cover childcare, and stay on track for the future. The best time to buy is while you're young and healthy, when rates are lowest.

Your advisor compares policies from multiple insurance companies and helps you choose the type and amount that fit your budget, then handles the application with you start to finish.

FAQ

Life insurance questions

How much life insurance do I need?

It depends on what you want covered: lost income, a mortgage, debts, children's education, and final expenses. We'll add these up with you to land on a coverage amount that fits your budget.

What's the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term life covers you for a set period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years, and usually costs the least. Whole life lasts your entire life and builds cash value, at a higher premium.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Many policies today can be approved with a health questionnaire and no exam, depending on your age, health, and coverage amount.

What is final expense insurance?

A smaller whole life policy designed to cover funeral costs and final bills so your family doesn't have to.

Important life insurance information

  • Coverage requires approval. All policies are subject to the insurance company's underwriting. Your age, health, tobacco use and other factors affect eligibility and price.
  • Term life ends. Term policies cover a set period and have no cash value. Premiums may increase or coverage may end when the term is over.
  • Cash value is not an investment account. Whole and indexed universal life cash values grow according to the policy's terms. Indexed policies are not invested in the stock market, have caps and floors, and illustrations are not guarantees. Loans and withdrawals reduce the cash value and death benefit and may have tax consequences.
  • Final expense and no-exam policies. Some policies have a waiting period (graded benefit) before the full death benefit is paid.
  • Replacing a policy. Don't cancel existing coverage until a new policy is approved and in force. Replacing a policy can have costs and new contestability periods.
  • Your policy documents control. Benefits, exclusions and limitations are set by the insurance company. Products and availability vary by state. We do not give tax or legal advice.
